It’s early on Saturday morning when the first neighbour starts up their lawnmower. But there’s no noise or din involved; just a pleasant hum. The new generation of lawnmowers not only mows lawns independently, but is also particularly quiet (up to maximum 60 dB). This keeps things cosily quiet in our gardens.

Caution: High noise levels

Lying on a beach chair without a care in the world, listening to birdsong and releasing tension – for many garden owners, this is the embodiment of relaxation and recovery from everyday working life. Yet the numerous objects and activities of daily life increase general ambient noise levels and frequently cause intolerable stress, such as the operation of garden tools, circular or chain saws, construction sites, aeroplane take-offs or high-speed cars and motorbikes.

People frequently have a subjective sensitivity to noise levels. Noise levels are measured in decibels (dB). Whereas a television or music at noise levels suitable for inside a room lie at 55 to 60 dB and are enjoyable, most people consider a dishwasher at 44 dB to be irritating, and canteen noise at 65 dB disruptive. The pain threshold lies at approximately 120 dB. From 150 dB, irreparable hearing damage occurs within seconds – but our hearing already starts to suffer from a continuous noise level of 85 dB.

The American Center for Hearing and Communication has therefore called upon people to take part in an “International Noise Awareness Day” since 1996 – and this year, it will take place on 24th April. On this campaign day, the intention is to attract our attention to the causes of noise and its effects. The aim is a sustainable improvement in our quality of life.

Noisy is out of fashion

People living in conurbations, but also in quiet areas in the country or in the area of school buildings or hospitals have a right to locations offering quiet, recovery and leisure time. This was stipulated in the year 2002 when the EU Environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EC was put into force. Amongst other things, it demands the preparation of strategic noise maps and – as a result – the creation of noise action plans. In this way, quiet areas should be protected and the ambient noise levels in high-noise areas should be reduced. In addition to noise pollution itself, non-acoustic factors also play a role in the identification and selection of quiet areas. The European Environment Agency EEA has published a “Good practice guide on quiet areas” to assist the responsible authorities.

Tips for a “quiet garden”

Those wanting to reduce noise levels in their gardens themselves can already create an “oasis of calm” using only a few pieces of equipment and measures – for example with quiet garden tools. The noise made by Gardena Robotic Lawnmowers lies substantially below the acoustic power levels of petrol-drive lawnmowers at 50 to 60 dB. Depending on their size, modern lawnmowers are in the meantime able to cope with lawn areas of between 250 and 1,600 m². In addition, a quiet garden area can also gain in quiet and quality of life through the following tricks:
•    Protected seating (e.g. hidden through dense, vertical plant growth)
•    Noise/privacy screens (made from wood, stone and glass)
•    Masking of noise (through water attractions and wind chimes)
•    Use of sound-absorbent flooring materials
