Growing chillies successfully is all about creating the right conditions at the roots, so caring for your soil properly is absolutely key.

Having said this, chillies are surprisingly straightforward once you understand what they’re looking for. So, don’t be fooled into thinking you need to sink cash into purchasing specialist products or sprays.

YouTube sensation and grow-your-own expert, Huw Richards, has partnered with Europe’s number one watering and hand tools brand, GARDENA to share his top tips for ensuring the perfect soil for growing chillies.

Drainage comes first

If there’s one thing chillies don’t tolerate, it’s sitting in cold, wet soil. Poor drainage restricts oxygen around the roots, which quickly leads to weak growth and problems later in the season.

In UK gardens, heavier soils are common, but they’re not a barrier to growing chillies well. I improve drainage by adding generous amounts of compost, which opens up the soil structure and allows excess water to drain away while still holding enough moisture for steady growth. It’s a simple, organic fix that improves the soil long-term rather than masking the problem.

When growing in containers, drainage becomes even more important. I always make sure pots have clear drainage holes and avoid compacting compost too firmly. A light, well-structured growing medium allows roots to breathe, warm up more quickly, and establish faster - all essential for heat-loving plants like chillies.

Organic matter makes the difference
Chillies are hungry plants, so I always focus on building soil that’s rich in organic matter. Homemade compost, worm compost, and well-rotted organic material all feed the soil life, which then releases nutrients slowly and steadily to the plant.

This creates balanced growth with strong stems, healthy leaves, and reliable fruiting without the boom-and-bust cycle that comes from overfeeding. Plants grown this way are also more resilient to stress, pests, and inconsistent weather, which is particularly useful in a UK climate.

Aim for a balanced soil pH
Chillies prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil, but this is rarely something I obsess over too much. Most garden soils naturally fall into this range once organic matter is added regularly because compost gently buffers the soil, making nutrients more available and improving overall plant health.

Rather than chasing numbers, I encourage gardeners to focus more on soil conditions. Healthy, living soil almost always creates the right environment for chillies to thrive.

Warm soil matters more than rich soil
This is one of the most overlooked factors when growing chillies. Even the most nutrient-dense soil won’t perform if it’s cold. Chillies are warmth-loving plants, and their roots simply don’t function well in cool conditions.

In the UK, I wait until soil temperatures have properly risen before planting out - usually late spring. Planting too early often results in weeks of stalled growth, which the plants never fully recover from.

A smart soil moisture sensor, such as the GARDENA Smart Sensor, measures soil moisture quickly, reliably and particularly accurately and reports through the GARDENA smart app. When paired with a Smart water control and irrigation system it allows for a fully automated watering system.

A slightly poorer but warm soil will outperform a rich but cold one every time. This is one reason containers and greenhouses work so well for chillies - they warm up far faster than open ground.

Containers create ease
For many UK gardeners, pots are the simplest and most reliable way to grow chillies. A good-quality peat-free multi-purpose compost, mixed with extra homemade compost or worm compost, provides excellent drainage, fertility, and warmth.

Containers also give you control. You can move plants to capture more sunlight, shelter them from cold snaps, and manage watering far more precisely. For small gardens, patios, or indoor growing, they’re often the best option.

Ultimately, strong soil grows strong plants, and the best soil for chillies isn’t complicated. It’s free-draining, rich in organic matter, biologically active, and warm. Get those foundations right, and you’ll spend far less time fixing problems and far more time harvesting.
