Cluster and townhouse living continues to grow in popularity, and it’s easy to see why: better security, lower property maintenance, shared amenities, and a convenient lifestyle. For some, a smaller garden with less upkeep is part of the appeal, while keen gardeners will enjoy getting their hands dirty, whatever the size.

And whether you’ve inherited a garden with overgrown shrubs, weeds, and patchy grass, or a new one with only lawn, boundary walls, and a patio, there is plenty of potential to transform it into an inviting extension of your living area.

The key is to think about how you want to use that space and then make choices that support that. So before heading to the nursery or reaching for your garden tools, a little upfront planning can save you time, money, and effort.

Here are some practical tips for making the most of your small garden:

Before you dig in
If the garden is new or barely planted, note where the sun falls, check the soil condition and decide where beds, paths, and seating work best. Remember that the small shrub in the nursery won’t necessarily stay small.

In an established garden, first take stock. Keep healthy plants that provide shade or structure, thin overcrowded beds, and relocate those that aren’t thriving because they’re in the wrong spot.

For compact balcony gardens, choose plants that won’t outgrow the space. Watering can also be a challenge, but the GARDENA AquaBloom is designed for areas without tap access.

Privacy without feeling boxed in

In townhouse and cluster developments, privacy can be a challenge, especially if there are double‑storey homes with windows overlooking your garden. A living screen strategically positioned beside the patio is both decorative and a visual buffer.

Train fragrant star jasmine up a trellis for evergreen foliage, or plant indigenous Cape honeysuckle for cheerful colour. Be sure to check your complex rules first if you plan to attach trellises to shared walls.

Make it your own

Prefer a neat garden without much fuss? Go for hardy plants that need less water and can cope with dry spells. Choose compact, evergreen shrubs and, if there’s space, a small, slow‑growing tree for shade and height. Whatever you pick, check the mature size, root habit, and what suits your region and frost conditions.

You don't need to fill every corner either. A little breathing room can feel more spacious and allows your chosen plants and features to stand out.

Keen gardeners can treat a small space as a canvas. Every plant gets noticed, so you can be more adventurous with colour, texture, seasonal changes, and perfecting plant combinations.

Experiment with colourful flower beds, create a herb garden, or fill a hanging basket for height. With less ground to look after, you can spend more time on the finishing touches, including decorative features that add personality to your garden.

Gardena’s ClickUp! Decor Set is a clever garden accessory that lets you switch interesting decorative elements on a single wooden pole with a simple click. Whether it's a flower bowl, lantern, bird feeder, or insect hotel, it adds a clean, modern touch to the garden while making it easy to refresh the look with the seasons.

Designed with modern outdoor living in mind, the compact GARDENA Balcony Box keeps essential gardening tools neatly organised while blending effortlessly into your balcony setting. Its smart, attractive design means your tools become part of the space, rather than something you need to hide away.

Pots, paths and pebbles

Don’t let the patio vanish under a jumble of pots. A few larger ones will soften its edges while leaving space for chairs and a clear path to the door. For something striking and unusual, try a dwarf protea, compact lemon tree or a sculptural succulent.

Stepping stones edged with silver carpet look lovely and need no mowing. This indigenous ground cover is ideal for sunny, well-drained spots with light foot traffic.

Pebbles or gravel can finish narrow corners, with edging to keep them from wandering.

In the end, the most rewarding garden is one that reflects you, whether it’s a peaceful retreat that’s easy to maintain or a place to indulge your green thumb.
