The coronavirus pandemic has shown us how important home becomes in times of crisis. Restrictions on our freedom of movement heighten our perception of our home as a place of sanctuary, where we feel safe and secure. In its latest report on living trends for 2021, the Zukunftsinstitut identified the trend of home suite home – the desire for creating open spaces within one’s own home as an expression of the mega-trends of individualisation and security. GARDENA presents ways of achieving this and provides an overview of the key outdoor living trends for 2021.

Scandi and Japandi

With its cosy ambiance, light colours and clear forms, Scandinavian minimalism continues to be popular in 2021. Those wanting to bring something new to the Scandi style can experiment with Japanese highlights. The young, trendy Japandi living style combines the earthy aesthetic of the Far East with the cool and straightforward design language of Scandinavia – for a relaxed home environment in which to escape hectic everyday life.

Colours inspired by nature

Both of these style trends emphasise muted, nature-inspired colours. White, grey and wood continue to be the dominant colours in design, just as they were last year. Pillows and throws are used to add colour highlights with earth and forest tones, referencing the natural colour nuances of the garden and dissolving the boundary between the outdoors and the interiors.

For more natural-looking living spaces

The look is rounded off with organic forms that feature flowing transitions. These exude tranquillity and transform the outdoor-themed home into a true sanctuary. As with the colours, the choice of materials is influenced by the natural world. Pillowcases made of linen and cotton, seating made of willow and rattan, and jute carpets are especially popular this year, as these create a natural and relaxed atmosphere.

The ClickUp! lifestyle system from GARDENA perfectly references the most popular features of the Scandi and Japandi trends. The functionality embodied by both living trends is one of the core attributes of the ClickUp! system. The popular organic forms are particularly obvious in the round, flowing design of the ClickUp! FlowerBowl. The planted flowers add colour highlights and create a flowing transition between the in-door and outdoor spaces.
